College - First in Your Family

First of all, congratulations! This is such an exciting time. As you get started with your college career, here are some ways you can prepare:

Before Applying

  1. Being the first in your family to attend college is exciting, but it can also be a challenge. We are excited to help you begin this journey! To find out more about earning a degree at the University of Arkansas, get in touch with your Admissions Counselor or schedule a visit today.
  2. Be sure to check out what the College Access Initiative has to offer so that you can begin preparing for a fulfilling undergraduate career.

Before Classes Begin

  1. Attend Orientation.
    1. Orientation is a 1-2 day event that occurs in May, June, or August, before you begin classes. At orientation you will learn about different campus services and resources, register for classes, learn about different majors, and have a lot of fun! Parents and family are welcome.
    2. At least a month before attending, spend some time reading and then completing this orientation checklist. Hope to see you there!
  2. Consider going to R.O.C.K. Camp.
    1. R.O.C.K. Camp is an extended orientation program for first year students. It is a great way to make friends and get involved on campus over the summer before moving in. (There is a registration fee, and some scholarships are available as well.)
  3. Prepare to attend HOG W.I.L.D. Welcome Week events.
    1. Welcome Week events help you learn about campus departments, academic colleges, student organizations, community vendors and so much more. Emails, sidewalk chalk, and flyers are just a few ways to learn about the events happening on campus, so keep an eye out!

At the Start of Your First Semester

The first few weeks of attending college will feel strange, and maybe even confusing. While everything is new to you, know that most everyone around you is feeling the same way. Take time to make friends and get involved. Soon enough the U of A will start to feel like home. Be sure to check out some of these programs to help make your transition smooth:

Student Support Services
Designed specifically for first-generation college students and for students with particular academic needs, this program will help “empower you and assist you to achieve academic excellence through to graduation.”
New Student and Family Programs
New Student and Family Programs offers positive and engaging initiatives to help you connect with the university and have a great year.
Office of Student Activities
You can browse through all of the offices on campus to find what interests you and get involved.
Volunteer Action Center
Find enrichment through giving back to the Fayetteville community.
Student Success Center
This center offers academic support to help you do your very best.
Academic Advising
Your Academic Advisor is here to help you succeed. Meet with them to make a plan for your graduation.
Career Development Center
If you feel you need a little more direction in your degree, the Career Development Center will help you identify your strengths to get your ideal job.
